La Défense is the fancy business district in Paris, and the largest in Europe. In contrast with the rest of the city with its older architecture, we’re here dealing with skyscrapers with their full glass design, a festival of lines with a blue tint. Rather than going for the full buildings with a wide lens, I’ve focused on the layers and flattened the scales with a telephoto lens. Lines are blurred in this abstract landscape. Let’s dive in La Défense!

Daniel Abt - ABB FIA Formula E - Paris - 2019

Daniel Abt – Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler

Let’s go to Paris for the 8th round of the 2018-2019 season of Formula E in Paris, on the Invalides circuit. The main particularity of the Formula E championship, besides having a great panel of drivers, is to regroup around electric single seaters some of the largest car manufacturers in the world:  BMW, Audi, Nissan, Venturi, DS, NIO, with Porsche and Mercedes joining next year.

The 2018-2019 Formula E season is very peculiar as  we’ve had 7 drivers from 7 different team winning the first 7 races, with also 7 different polemen. A first !

The Paris round has been won by Robert Frijns, which make it the 8th winner in 8 rounds. It as also been the very first race to happen under the rain. I was really well seated at the end of the main straight, and could witness one of the craziest races ever. However taking photos from the spectators seating has not been easy because of the fences, the trees, the speakers, the lamp posts and the smartphones… I needed to be creative!

Strangers in the Dark XXVII - Austerlitz train station. Paris, France, 2018.

Stangers in the Dark XVII – Austerlitz Train Station. Get a print!

The Austerlitz train station is Paris, France, is undergoing some very serious works in order to get modernized, and also extended with four new platforms that has been finished a few months ago. This newer section of the station features a much more modern design than the 1840 architecture of the main building. It really offers some great lines and lights for the photographer 🙂

Back to back. Galeries du Palais Royal, Paris, France, 2016.

The last weeks were vacation time, but it was also the occasion to go back to my motherland, France. As we went with my wife’s family for whom it was the first trip in France, a mandatory stop was Paris. How could we not go to the City of Light! I was the one which was I think the most excited: I’m lucky to know Paris pretty well, and it’s a great sport for urban photography 🙂

After a short stop by the Louvre museum and its pyramid of glass, we went just by the other side of the Rivoli street to the Palais Royal and its galleries and gardens. It’s a place I haven’t been before and with a great potential for photographers! There, while browsing the antique and weird shops under the arches of the galleries, I’ve spotted those people on their bench, back to back. And this man, on the other bench on the other side of the path, turning back to them also. Kind of a back to back… to back, actually! It was just after noon, the sun was high in the sky, shadows were thick, perfect conditions for another contrasty shot. And here we go for a nice triangle between the people, and a nice symmetry with the trees. I think frequent readers know I like it!

I wish I’ve had more time for taking photos during this trip. Being a “tour guide” doesn’t help to focus on what’s going on around you. I’m more of a lone wolf when shooting streets anyhow. I can’t wait for another trip to Paris!
