Blur. Orléans, France, 2019. Get a print!

Another photo from my hometown, Orléans, France. This time I played with longer exposures in order to get this weird, blurred mood. Being a coffee addict really helps creating blur for this kind of photo! I wonder if I could start a project and make it a follow-up to Strangers in the Dark?

I’ve just moved to my new house and, for the first time for a too long time, I just got an idea for what could be a great photo. I searched for my gear across multiple boxes, found pretty much everything but… no battery nor charger. I just had the one in the Canon 6D, that was blinking to its death. The challenge was then to make a strobe’d autoportrait in just a few shots, and without remote.

Yeah, fun.

The first shot was both a focus preparation with my empty desk chair to simulate my head and a rapid lighting test. Then I sat on a stool and took 3 shots, before the camera died. Loading the photos in the computer from last to first, big disappointment, the photos just suck… until I reach for my very first test photo, where I noticed something I haven’t even seen at first on the camera’s screen: my cat, Yoko, has invited herself in the shot, and seemed very interested by this bright thing.

It definitively saved my day.

A glimpse of light. Orléans, France, 2017.

A glimpse of light. Orléans, France, 2017. Get a print!

Having moved backed in France, it’s a new playground for me. I know Orléans, my home town, quite well, of course. But as my passion for photography has developed when I was abroad, it is the first time I roam in its street with the eye of a photographer. And trust me, it’s a beautiful city! It’s amazing to figure out how my perception of things has changed…

Orléans being a medieval city (you all know Joan of Arc, right ?), its historic center is a maze of narrow streets with old but tall houses close the ones to the others. And when the sun sets, it’s the occasion for its rays to light up those streets like they’re on fire, while others are in a deep shadow. A glimpse of light. This is the approach I’ve taken for my first photo in Orléans.

Sometimes while on urban exploration mission you find some incredible places that just ask to be featured on a photo session. That’s the case of this photo. My wife and I switched the scope of the day, shooting an old factory’s abandoned offices, into a photo session where… ghosts invited themselves at the party?! This photo is part of a brand new project named “Ghost”, that I will slowly feature on this website.

Under Marasti Bridge. Cluj-Napoca, Romania, 2017.

Under Marasti Bridge, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, 2017. Get a print.

The Marasti bridge is a famous piece of infrastructure in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Beside its main purpose, being a bridge 🙂 , it is also a place where the street artists of the region can express themselves. It has been chosen as the main canvas for a grafitti contest for the TiMAF, the Transylvanian International Music and Art Festival, a few years ago. This mix of architecture, street art and partial urban decay is a great start for a new Urban Exploration project that will be my main focus in 2017.

I wanted a contrast, with those static but illustrated pillars. Something moving, dynamic. Luckily for me, the roundabout under the bridge is a good opportunity for playing with lights. I just needed to way for the night, and let the magic happen. The magic of longer exposures, 30 seconds in this particular case. I have movement, I have dynamic, and I gain a fantastic light with those curvy rays.

While it was not necessarily a complicated photo to take, I’ve had to be a bit more creative to get an interesting, dynamic framing and avoid boring features such as walls. The solution? My dear dutch angle, that helped me maximise the light rays area, while creating a bunch of diagonal lines and helped me pushing the walls just outside the frame. There was only one caveat: it was a windy night, the camera was hanging over the road below me, it was not very confident. Hopefully, my sturdy tripod didn’t fail and kept everyone at bay!
